| Project: Valley of Stone Heritage Initiative | | Applicant: Groundwork | | Programme: Heritage Grants | | Location: Rossendale, Lancashire | | Region: North West | | Amount awarded: £534,000 | | | | Description: Project will concentrate on 3 major 'flag ship' sites including: Thurns Head Quarry, Facit Quarry Chimney & Incline and Lee Quarry with its associated mineral tramway. The efforts of conservation will be mainly focused at these 3 sites together with 'way-marked' walks, 'Tramper' access routes for the disabled and interpretation on 8 sites. A programme of training in heriage conservation skills that lead to AQA qualificiations and an innovative outreach programme that involves training volunteers to deliver education and access improvements for hard to reach groups.
A website with innovative use of new technology to present the quarry heritage to a diverse audience. Town trails with textured plaques that engage the community at street level. An oral history and video project that engages the community with their own heritage. 2 arts related activities that involve young people in the presentation of their tangible and intangible heritage. The 1st project will be artist run workshops that design a sculpture trail that engages the senses with tactiles stone features. The second project will be an exhibition of young peoples responses to Rossendale's quarry heritage that will inform the production of a piece of visual theatre that will tour local schools and community groups. |
